"The MiniSymphony" is a very special 5- to 7-piece musical ensemble based upon string quartet and accordion.

While the qualities of string instruments are universally appreciated, the accordion remains a much under-estimated instrument.  In this case, however, we are speaking about the classical accordion, and in addition, its Russian cousin, the bayan.

The combination of a string quartet plus one accordion/bayan (not taking into account the possibility of the additional piano) actually creates the effect of sounding like a much larger orchestra.

Repertoire - When talking about the type of music that The MiniSymphony performs, it becomes difficult to pinpoint just one style. Every program features a variety of genres covering

  • Classical (Bach, Mozart, and Strauss, to name a few)
  • Pop favorites from the 20’s through the 90’s
  • Broadway show tunes
  • Movie themes
  • Ragtime

And International folk music from every corner of the globe

  • French cafe songs
  • Fiery Hungarian & Russian gypsy tunes
  • Latin tangos, as well as avant-garde tangos by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla.

The Piano

Jon Persson plays a wide variety of styles on the piano, ranging from classical (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, and Debussy, just to name a few) to pop favorites from the 20’s through the 90’s;  Broadway show tunes, French, Italian, German and Viennese songs, and Latin tangos, as well as avant-garde tangos by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla.

The Russian Bayan/БАЯН

The Russian cousin of the piano-accordion and chromatic-accordion is the bayan.  This is an amazingly complex and powerful creation, capable of producing an astonishing variety of sounds. A very versatile instrument, capable of interpreting jazz, Broadway, Russian gypsy, traditional Argentine tangos, as well as avant-garde tangos by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, Baroque and Romantic classics by the Great Masters, and much more.
